How to Stay Warm If Your Furnace Stops Working

If it were up to us, you’d never face this scenario. You’d never have to look up methods to stay warm because your furnace completely broke down. The fact of the matter is that this happens to the best of us. Of course, it’s a lot less likely to happen if you keep up with your heating maintenance appointments. These tune-ups allow our professionals to comprehensively inspect, clean, and adjust your furnace inside and out, which helps it work as effectively and efficiently as possible for as long as possible.

Maintenance tune-ups also help prevent small repair needs from turning into much bigger, major breakdowns that can lead to the subject of this post. But we’re going to assume that if you’re reading this, you probably already have a broken-down heater. Give our team a call if this is the case so we can get your system back into working order. And while you wait for your furnace repair technician to show up, follow the following tips to stay warm.

DIY Weather Sealant

Do you have any caulking on hand? Fantastic! Pick the smallest room in your home, or the room with the lowest ceiling, that you can collect your family in, and if it has drafty window, seal up those drafts with that caulking.

No caulking available? That’s okay too! This isn’t actually something many homeowners keep on hand, to be honest. What you can do instead is grab some pillows, blankets, towels, etc. and use those to block off the windows and doors to avoid letting cool drafts in.

Move Your Body

This probably sounds silly, but hear us out! A fun way to stay warm and get your mind off your heating woes, especially if you have young kiddos, is to have yourself a little dance party. Make sure you move the furniture safely out of the way before attempting this, but then turn on a family favorite song and dance away.

Cook

What should you cook? Pretty much anything will do, honestly. Using your oven or stove will bring natural heat into the home—of course, that said, you never want to use this as your primary source of heat. But if you have something to cook anyway, or you want to bake some cookies or something of that nature, you can warm up your home temporarily without a furnace to help.

Turn On Incandescent Lights

This is, admittedly, not the most energy-efficient tip. But like the dancing tip above, hear us out! LED lighting has become more and more popular in recent years, and that’s for good reason–they use less energy. However, if your goal is to stay warm while waiting for your furnace repairs, then this may help do the trick. If you have some incandescent lightbulbs in your home, switch out the light fixtures in a room or two with those bulbs. You’ll find that they generate a lot more heat than you may imagine.
