Tips for Using Your Furnace As Efficiently As Possible

The official end of winter will be here soon enough, meaning we can turn our attention to our air conditioners. Have you scheduled maintenance for yours yet this year? It’s not too early!

Regardless of whether you’ve scheduled AC maintenance this year yet or not, it’s never a bad idea to give your furnace a little extra attention, no matter how much longer you might be using it. The thing is, we use our furnace systems so much around here, that it makes sense you want to use yours as efficiently as possible, to save money on energy bills and to help the furnace last as long as possible, right?

Well, boosting your furnace efficiency might be easier than you think. Homeowners sometimes think that boosting heating efficiency and saving money means not using their heating system, but this is simply not the case. There are some simple things you can do to not only boost your furnace efficiency but your air conditioner efficiency too when it comes time to use it. Like what? Read on!

Get a New Thermostat

There is a small device that you could upgrade to boost your furnace system’s efficiency, and this is your thermostat. Sure, it’s a small component, but it’s not a minor one! While a thermostat is small, yours is an essential part of your HVAC systems.

This device is how you communicate with your heater and your air conditioner. Upgrading to even the most basic digital thermostat, or a WiFi or smart thermostat, can make a huge difference in temperature accuracy and therefore system efficiency, saving you money!

Utilize Weatherstripping

The heat from your furnace, and the cool air from your air conditioner, can leak out through cracks in the doors and windows, making you lose out on energy that you’re otherwise paying for. Consider investing in weatherstripping in order to seal up your windows and doors, and to make sure the heat in your home stays in your home.

Use Your Ceiling Fans

We sometimes confuse customers with this tip, but bear with us! Okay, so you know how in the summertime you can use your ceiling fans to create a movement of air that helps you cool down faster, and use your air conditioner less? This same concept can be applied in the winter!

By flipping a switch near the center of the ceiling fan, you can reverse the direction of the ceiling fan blades, pulling hot air down from the ceiling and into your home. This helps you feel warmer, and you can adjust the thermostat of your heater accordingly in order to help the system run less frequently—meaning more efficiently!

Don’t Forget About Maintenance

Just like we suggest AC maintenance every spring before you’ll need your cooling system the most, we also strongly recommend that you have heating maintenance done each fall. But what matters here is consistency. The time of the year you have maintenance done doesn’t matter as much as how consistently you have that service done.

For traditional central air conditioners and heaters, this service should be completed every year.
